You name it, she’s done it! Known to many as a strong advocate of healthy living and an active lifestyle, Queenie is a Singapore Sports Influencer with a keen interest in lifestyle and fashion with an interesting sporting journey – a competitive dancer by training, she made a drastic switch to compete in bodybuilding and was crowned Champion in the Natural Bikini Bodybuilding competition back in 2018. She then moved on to teach as a certified fitness trainer under Barry’s Singapore and really got serious about incorporating running into her workout routines.
At present she’s a budding entrepreneur of her own fitness program and sportswear brand and runs distances of up to 5km to 10km regularly as part of her training routine – either on her own or with her regular community group the Fast and Free Run Club. She hopes to inspire and motivate more people around her to pick up sports through her own fitness journey.
RUN SG: You’re tackling the OSIM Sundown Marathon (5km) for the first time. Any race goals in mind?
Queenie: It’s going to be my first OSIM Sundown Marathon experience and I have decided to challenge myself and set a personal time goal of finishing the 5km road race in 23 minutes. I have completed a couple of local road races in Singapore but never one late in the night so it’s definitely going to be a refreshing new challenge.
RUN SG: You are a spin instructor by profession. How and when did you develop the interest in the running sport?
Queenie: I never knew I could run until I got rope into the school cross country team by chance when I was 17 years old and came in a surprising first. This sparked my interest in running and things really started getting serious when I started coaching at Barry’s Singapore as I delved into developing good form and running technique whilst integrating speed workouts on the treadmill. So despite spin being my main focus, running has always been a great cross training option and staple in my weekly routines!
RUN SG: Care to share your training plans?
Queenie: Definitely! In my 5km training plan leading up to the OSIM Sundown Marathon race, I will be doing a progress interval threshold run every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from the first two weeks of training and for the remaining three weeks I’ll be adding in additional speed run intervals at a hard effort. The other (odd) days will be used for rest and recovery or conditioning in the gym where I to build on strength and power.
RUN SG: As an avid fitness enthusiast, what are your usual post training recovery regime?
Queenie: As a fitness trainer the two key pillars of post training recovery I recommend would be to fuel the body with the right nutrients through a balanced diet and definitely ensuring you get in sufficient rest and recovery amidst the training program. To counter aches and soreness my personal favourite is the OSIM uZap Gun, Percussive Massage Gun that I use regularly after my hard sessions. The rapid pressure bursts from the interchangeable (6 Profiles) massage head with four massage intensities that beats up to 3000 pulses per minute allows me to get a deep tissue massage that really targets the muscle tissues and fascial muscles up to 10mm in depth. It’s also super light and portable at just 650g so I can easily bring it around with me for my workout classes or sessions.
RUN SG: What will be your best advice for anyone who is doing a new race for the first time?
Queenie: It’s easy to get worried about the end results or timings but we should not forget that the most important part of training and racing is to enjoy the entire process - it’s where we learn and mould the best version of yourself! See you all at the start line at sundown.
