The organisers of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon, Ironman Asia, have released updated details about the road closures for the race weekend.
Points of interest include the fact that a portion of the marathon will be run along the West Coast Highway viaduct above Pasir Panjang Road, where special features such as water misting stations can be found. At the eastern end of the route, the marathon will run along the East Coast Park Service Road, taking advantage of the wider road width.
They have also stressed that roads leading to essential and emergency facilities such as hospitals will remain open for the duration of the event.
Ironman Asia’s Managing Director Geoff Meyer, says, “We’ve worked with all the relevant government agencies for this year’s marathon route update, primarily with two things in mind. We want to place at a level that is of a World Marathon Major standard, making it accessible for the public to come out and see the event. Also, we hope that the route is somewhat future-proof, so that for subsequent events a certain level of consistency at key locations can stay in place.”
After starting from Orchard Road last year, the marathon start has been moved to the F1 Pit Building for 2018.
Road closures have been designed to be as efficient as possible, and in many places will be reopened almost immediately after the last runner passes through. As before, medical vehicles and first-aid stations will be placed at regular intervals along the route for the fastest access possible.
As train services will not be available during the early hours of the weekend, organisers have partnered with ShareTransport to provide shuttle bus services from 47 pick-up locations islandwide to take runners directly to the start point.
Members of the public are strongly advised to plan their journeys ahead of time, and are encouraged to use public transport during the affected times on 8th and 9th December 2018. A full list of road closures can be found at https://singaporemarathon.com/road-closure/.
Hot tip: It will also be useful to download Waze, a GPS navigation app which will be updated to reflect road closures.
