Few events capture the spirit of trail running quite like the 2025 edition of the Amazean Jungle Thailand by UTMB. Nestled in the southern reaches of Thailand’s Yala province, the town of Betong transforms into a vibrant hub of endurance, culture, and nature during race season, welcoming runners to one of the UTMB World Series' most unique Southeast Asian destinations.

RUN SG visited Betong to explore the race and the surrounding experience firsthand. From remote mountain passes to hot springs and skywalks, the journey was a reminder that trail running can offer much more than a finish line.Getting There: From Singapore to the Heart of the South.
Getting There: From Singapore to the Heart of the South
The journey began at Singapore Changi Airport with a direct flight to Hat Yai. Upon arrival at Hat Yai Airport, fellow Singaporean runners approached with smiles and excitement, asking if we were also heading to the Amazean Jungle Thailand by UTMB, setting the tone for the running vibes to come. We also took a satisfying lunch break at Mellow Restaurant before starting the long drive to Betong.

From there, a 4–5-hour scenic drive into the heart of Yala province offered stunning views and a sense of anticipation for what lay ahead. The route also introduced us to the noticeably fresh and clean air, especially appreciated later when running through the trails, where the crisp atmosphere added to the immersive nature experience.
The drive itself is worth turning into a mini adventure, with plenty of scenic stops, local food, and toilet breaks to make it comfortable and fun.
A helpful tip for international runners: it’s strongly recommended to pick up a local SIM card, which can be conveniently purchased with Thai Baht cash at Hat Yai Airport. E-SIMs tend to have patchy reception in more remote areas, and having stable connectivity is especially useful for maps, translations, and event updates.
Accommodation at G-Hotel Betong provided a comfortable base, where runners from across Asia gathered to exchange tips, stories, and excitement for the days ahead, and of course, to enjoy the famous BetongChicken.
Before the Start Line: Culture, Bibs & Community

In the lead-up to the race, participants completed bib collection and gear checks at the Betong Mongkollit Tunnel. Required items included hydration vests with a minimum of 1L capacity and headlamps for pre-dawn racing. The race pack collection was smooth and well-organized, with an infectious buzz throughout the venue and town.
Briefings for each race category are also conducted in detail, ensuring participants are fully informed and well-prepared for the challenges ahead.
Sightseeing stops included the Betong Hot Springs, the iconic Clock Tower, and the Piyamit Tunnel, once a communist base and now a historical landmark. The early morning visit to Aiyoe Weng Skywalk, overlooking a rolling sea of mist, stood out as one of the most awe-inspiring moments, setting the tone for the Amazean Jungle adventure ahead.
Runners are often spotted during these sightseeing stops, exchanging encouragement before race day. These organic connections and the scenic backdrop, from hilly viewpoints to sites like the Winter Flower Garden, create a wholesome, unforgettable atmosphere that blends exploration with anticipation.
Race Day: MIST 20K, 1030m with elevation gain

The race day experience was a combination of thrill, energy, adventure, and an electric atmosphere.
Among the various categories, the MIST 20K which covers a race distance of 23km offered a strong yet accessible introduction to Betong's untamed terrain. Flagged off in the dark at 5am from the iconic Betong Mongkollit Tunnel, the race led runners into the jungle under the glow of headlamps. As the sun began to rise, a magnificent sea of clouds unfurled through the valleys, offering one of the most memorable sunrise views of any trail event.
The course is technical and presents a rewarding challenge. Steep ascents and sharp descents test your footing, with ropes in select areas offering added support. Small river crossings and knee-level creeks added to the trail’s variety and adventure. For the daring, tree trunks become part of the journey. Though demanding, the course is widely considered achievable with preparation and presence of mind.
Support along the way was heartfelt, from race volunteers to local community members who set out buckets of water so runners could cool off mid-race. That simple gesture made it feel like being a kid again. Trail running is fun, after all.
As runners approached the final stretch, they were treated to a sweeping view of Betong town from above, a cinematic close to an already cinematic route. At the finish, each runner's name was announced over the loudspeakers, delivering a personal celebration that capped off a deeply immersive trail adventure.
The local Thai friendliness throughout the event made the entire experience even more memorable. From cheers at aid stations to smiles at every corner, the warmth of the community added heart to every step.

Beyond the Race: Recovery & Reward
The post-race experience reflected the richness of the region, with runners proudly receiving their finisher medal and event T-shirt as part of the accomplishment. Runners could unwind with Thai massages, soak in natural hot springs, or enjoy local cuisine. Meals at Bo Pla Noppadol showcased outstanding grilled fish, making you ready to enjoy your travel back towards Hat Yai, while still having one final goodbye at Betong’s iconic To Ku Chae Bridge before arriving at our hotel, Monkham Village Hatyai Hotel. But not before we got some post-race recovery food at Central Festival Hatyai. In Hat Yai, Chokdee Dim Sum delivered a delicious recovery breakfast that combined tradition with comfort.
More than just a race, the experience highlighted how regional towns like Betong in Yala province can play host to high-level trail events while offering runners and visitors an immersive travel adventure.
