The Jungle Book

The first ever Columbia Jungle Run received tremendous feedback from the participants.

Fancy an adventure run through a wild rainforest, complete with river crossings and obstacles to traverse, but stay totally safe in the meantime? The first Columbia Jungle Run delivered all of that, in a location that few would have thought capable of housing such an epic route.

Held on 1st October and organised by the Centaurs Group, the family event took place in the Pit, an offroad trail and obstacle course housed within a small ravine at the rear of The Grandstand in Bukit Timah.

Clever use of space and terrain meant that the participants could run a full 5km course in the jungle without resorting to doing multiple laps, and despite literally being in the backyard of a major shopping mall, once you started on the course it felt like you were a world away, thanks to the excellent tree cover within the strip of greenery.

From scaling over low walls to monkey bars across streams, and a couple of slides down muddy banks along the way, the event was challenging enough to test the mettle of the close to 400 participants, but also safe enough that children could complete them alongside their parents.

Safety marshals were stationed at every obstacle point and also scattered throughout the course at various vantage points. The early morning meant that the mosquitoes were out and about as well, and the only way to avoid them was to keep moving along the route and outrun them!

After completing the event, food and drink were available in the stands of the cavernous race tent. With freshly brewed coffees and various foods cooked to order on site, the smell of post-race food was simply too tempting for those on site.

The Centaurs Group hopes to turn this into an annual event, and judging from the enthusiastic response from the crowd, the word of mouth publicity is already off to a good start.
